Original photograph of the important violinist, composer and conductor, signed and inscribed at the head to violinist Marcel Chailley and dated Paris, June 1926. Ysaÿe is shown as a younger man in a brooding pose with his violin under his arm, and has penned (translated from the French): "A friendly souvenir for Marcel Chailley with all my admiration for his professional work." One small triangular tear affecting the inscription and some small edge chips; mounting remnants to the verso; overall in very good condition. 7.75 x 10 inches (19.7 x 25.2 cm).Carl Flesch called Ysaÿe "the most outstanding and individual violinist I have ever heard in my life," and he was the dedicatee of many major works from Debussy, Saint-Saens, Franck, Chausson and others.
The French violinist Marcel Chailley (1881–1936) studied at the Conservatoire de Paris and in 1908 married the pianist Céliny Richez, with whom he frequently performed. Together, the couple led summer music courses at their home in Seignelay, where students included Ivry Gitlis, Lola Bobesco and Denise Soriano. They were associated with many important French musicians of the early twentieth century. (15427)
