Signed photograph from the incomparable French pianist, who is shown examining a score at the piano and has signed and inscribed to the French pianist Céliny Chailley-Richez (translated from the French): "To Céliny Chailley-Richez—the great artist—the kind collaborator. With my respectful good wishes, Alfred Cortot, 1929." Photographed by Edm. Joaillier of Paris. Light overall toning and one small area of damage to the lower right, with part of the "A" in Cortot's signature drawn over again in ink; mounting remnants to the verso; overall in very good condition. 9.5 x 6.75 inches (23.9 x 17.2 cm).

From the collection of French pianist and teacher Céliny Chailley-Richez. Born to a musical family in 1894, she was a star student at the Conservatoire de Paris before marrying violinist Marcel Chailley in 1908. Together, the couple led summer music courses at their home in Seignelay, where students included Ivry Gitlis, Lola Bobesco and Denise Soriano. Chailley-Richez had a long friendship and musical partnership with Georges Enescu, and was associated with many important French musicians of the era. She died in 1973. (15410)
