Scribe, Eugene. (1791–1861)

Autograph Letter

Autograph letter from the important French playwright and librettist who collaborated with nearly every major opera composer of his time. April 16, 1853. Scribe writes to introduce a "young man from my village, who like many others was going to lose himself in the abyss of the theatre." Scribe asks his correspondent to help the young man sit "an admission exam for the office—after this, one has the hope of becoming an assistant." Expressing his gratitude for the favor, he concludes, "It will be a good work [...] as they say, it is the soul that we snatch from hell that takes us to paradise." 2 pp. of a bifolium. Light overall toning and some corner wear; overall in fine condition. 5.25 x 8 inches (13.4 x 20.7 cm).

Scribe's libretti were set by Verdi, Bellini, Auber, Halevy, Boieldieu, Donizetti, Rossini and Meyerbeer, for whom he was working on L'Africaine at the time of his death. (15334)
