Signed 1934 Photograph to the Tibbetts

Original photograph of the great violinist with pianist José Iturbi and baritone Lawrence Tibbett, signed and inscribed by both Heifetz and Iturbi to Tibbett and his wife Jane. The three are shown at their January 1934 benefit concert for "Destitute German Professionals." Heifetz has inscribed at the foot: "To Jane Tibbett - in remembrance of the concert on Jan. 12 1934 - and with all good wishes - Jascha Heifetz. New York - Jan. 24, 1934." Iturbi has inscribed at the head "Para Mr. and Mrs. Tibbett con todo cordialidad y estima - Jose Iturbi."  10 x 8 inches; 25 x 20 cm. Mounted to rigid backing, scattered silvering and light foxing, else fine. A remarkable association.

Jascha and Florence Heifetz were the hosts of the January 1934 concert, which benefited German emigrés fleeing Nazi persecution. It was a major society event, with the Hollywood Reporter writing: "Well, the Heifetzes had their musical soiree for the benefit of Destitute German Professionals that netted that worthy cause exactly fifteen thousand dollars. Four hundred people came to hear Heifetz, Iturbi and Tibbett and an extra five thousand dollars was contributed by Mrs. George Backer. Lucrezia Bori sat herself up in the very first row and conversed volubly with the performers. Chico Marx bought four tickets and brought along Mrs. Eddie Cantor and Jack Benny. [...] There was a funny incident connected with the concert. Somehow everyone thought that the other fellow had invited Professor Einstein to attend. The day before the concert, Florence Vidor called him up just to remind him and it was discovered that no one had asked him to come, and though he had heard about it he hadn't had the slightest idea of where or when it was to be held and so couldn't come because of a previous engagement."

In 1936, Heifetz and Tibbett were the co-founders of the American Guild of Musical Artists, the most important labor union for solo performing artists. (15293)
