Puccini, Giacomo. (1858–1924)

Triple Autograph Musical Quotation with Self-Portrait Sketch

Three autograph musical quotations from the important operatic composer, penned on a single album leaf together with a small caricature self-portrait sketch. The three short musical quotations, each of 1-2 bars, come from Puccini's operas Edgar, Le Villi, and La Bohème. Puccini has boldly signed and dated Torre del Lago, March 16, 1903. 17.9 x 12.2 cm.

From 1891 onwards, Puccini spent most of his time, when not traveling on business, at Torre del Lago, a small community about fifteen miles from Lucca situated between the Ligurian Sea and Lake Massaciuccoli, just south of Viareggio. Torre del Lago was the primary place for Puccini to indulge his love of hunting. "I love hunting, I love cars: and for these things, in the isolation of Torre del Lago, I keep the faith."  (15252)
