Callas, Maria. (1923–1977)

Signed Photograph in "Trovatore"

Signed photograph of La Divina as Leonora in the Mexico City production of Il Trovatore. She has signed at the foot and dated February 28, 1953. Photographed by Semo of Mexico and stamped by the photographer on the verso. Rather poor contrast to the signature and some wrinkling and silvering to the photograph; otherwise overall in very good condition. 8 x 10 inches (20.6 x 25.4 cm).

Callas' first Trovatore, a breakthrough role early in her career, took place in Mexico City in June 1950 at the Palacio de Bellas Artes. According to biographer Anne Edwards: "Il Trovatore brought her Mexico City engagement to a glorious close. There would be no going back. Although the Palacio de las Bellas Artes was not in the same category as La Scala and Mexico City did not have the élan of Milan, by appearing there Maria had become an international star and [her husband and manager] Battista was besieged with new offers for her to sing."
