Autograph letter from the French neoclassical painter to his associate and student Claudius Lavergne, regarding an article defending Ingres. February 14, 1852. Text, in full: "My dear Monsieur Lavergne, I cannot thank you enough for your charming article; [...] your generous defense has revealed to me an attack which I had always ignored; for these days I remove myself more than ever from all controversy, wanting rather in the last years which remain to me to be peaceful and to care only for art. All these considerations do not prevent me from thanking you for your kindness to me in this circumstance. [...] Ingres." 1 p. together with the original envelope. Overall toning and light foxing, but otherwise in fine condition. 5.25 x 8 inches (13.3 x 20.5 cm).

Claudius Lavergne (1815–1887) was a French painter, stained glass artist, and art critic who studied with Ingres in Rome. (15224)
