In Venezia: Presso Antonio Zatta e Figli. [ca. 1790]. String quartet in E flat major by the prolific Italian composer and violinist, who published almost 600 works before 1800. Numbered "II" at the head. In two movements, an Allegro maestoso and a Rondo with two variations. 4 parts in portfolio. Letterpress title page with woodcut device. Music engraved throughout, without plate number. Each part 2 pp., numbered 4-5. Some damp staining; two large stains through all the parts. Some edge wear; one heavy fold to the spine of the violin 1 part; edges of parts reinforced with paper, and some corner losses repaired. In a later hardcover portfolio, half cloth with patterned paper sides, with heavy toning to the edges. Overall in very good condition. Music 9.75 x 14 inches (25 x 35 cm), portfolio 10.5 x 14.75 inches (26.5 x 37.5 cm)."The first certain fact of Cambini's career is his arrival in Paris in the early 1770s. He performed one of his symphonies concertantes at the Concert Spirituel on 20 May 1773, and the following December his op.1, a set of string quartets, was issued by Vernier. Thereafter his works appeared with remarkable rapidity, and by 1800 close to 600 instrumental works had been published under his name. He was hardly less active in other areas. He composed, or contributed significantly to, at least 14 operas, of which a dozen were produced in Paris. [...] Cambini's name is best known today through a brief encounter with Mozart, who blamed him, with only circumstantial evidence, for Legros' cancellation of the performance of his Symphonie concertante (the lost k297b) at the Concert Spirituel."
