Salazar, Adolfo. (1890–1958) & Nicolau, Antoni. (1858–1933) [Carol-Bérard, Louis. (1888–1942)]

Two Autograph Letters and Postcard to Louis Carol-Bérard

An autograph letter and autograph postcard from the Spanish critic, composer and diplomat who was the preeminent Spanish musicologist of the Silver Age, to composer and critic Louis Carol-Bérard. The postcard (undated) enquires after his address (translated from the French): "Dear Monsieur Carol Bérard! I want to write to you but I don't have your address! Could you please write to me in Madrid so that I can reply at more length. I asked Ricardo Viñes for your address..." In the letter which follows, without Carol-Bérard's name but evidently also addressed to him (2 pp.; Madrid, August 18, 1919) Salazar thanks the critic for sending him an article ["La Musique d'Espagne," which appeared in the periodical Hispania in 1919], discusses further articles and upcoming performances, and asks for Francois Poulenc's address. (Full translation below.) Postcard of Cordoba with some toning and chips, letter with toning and folding creases; overall in fine condition. 3.5 x 5.5 inches (8.7 x 13.8 cm) and 6.75 x 9 inches (17.5 x 23 cm).

Together with an autograph letter to Carol-Bérard from the Catalan composer Antoni Nicolau, apologizing for having missed Carol-Bérard's invitation to a conference. March 3, 1922. 1 p. on letterhead of the Escuela Municipal de Música, Barcelona. Light toning, overall in fine condition. 5 x 8 inches (13 x 20.3 cm).

Letter from Salazar, translated from the French, in full:
"Madrid, August 18, 1919
Dear sir,  You are very kind to send me the January-March issue of Hispania with your beautiful work; I am very grateful for the words you have devoted to me. I hope to have the chance to return the favor when next autumn in his concerts at the S. N., M. Ricardo Viñes will play some of your music. I would like to speak to Ricardo about that, but I can't remember where he is at the moment. Also, I need to write to M. Poulenc about a few matters and to respond to a letter which he wrote to me months ago; do you know his address and would you be so kind as to give it to me?
You see that I am profiting from your kindness. Let me know how I can be of use to you. What sort of information do you want on your musicians? My article in the C. M. was published, I think, in May, perhaps even on the 15th of April (I don't have a copy) and I have sent in another which is awaiting publication.
I will send you those Preludes played by Vivien - the S. M. I., and which were published in England.
Yours [...] A. Salazar." (15159)
