Rare 1903 Concert Program
A very rare original 1903 concert program from the great Belgian violinist and important Russian pianist-composer. Appearing at the Grand Hall of the Russian Noble Assembly on December 8, 1903, the duo performed sonatas by Tchaikovsky and Bach, as well as solo works by Rachmaninov, Guiraud, Arenskiy, Chopin, Taneyev, Glazunov, Vieuxtemps, and Ysaÿe. 2 pp. of a bifolium. Light overall toning, two holes at the fold, edge wear and creases; overall in very good condition. 5.25 x 9.5 inches (13.2 x 24 cm).During his most active years as a performer, Ysaÿe collaborated with several important pianists, including Anton Rubinstein, Ferruccio Busoni, his brother Théophile Ysaÿe, and Alexander Siloti. At the time of this performance, Siloti was serving as director of the Moscow Philharmonic, and was beginning his influential Siloti Concerts series in St. Petersburg.
"Ysaÿe's career was at its height from his first American tour in 1894 to the outbreak of World War I in 1914. He played in the most famous concert halls and his talent was universally acknowledged. He used his fame as a virtuoso to launch new ventures: in 1895 he and Maurice Kufferath founded the Société Symphonique des Concerts Ysaÿe, managing and conducting a large orchestra which gave concerts mainly of modern music, and which became a feature of Belgian musical life."
