Iturbi, José. (1895–1980)

Signed Program

Original program from a Monte Carlo recital given by the Basque pianist, boldly signed on the cover and dated December 9, 1950. The cover features a half-tone photograph of Iturbi with his cigar; the program included works by Mozart, Schumann, Liszt, Ravel, Albeniz, Debussy, and Gershwin. In fine condition. 8.25 x 11 inches (21 x 27.6 cm).

The Basque conductor, harpsichordist and pianist is best remembered for his many MGM films from the 1940's, starting with "Thousands Cheer," which unfortunately undermined his reputation as a serious musician. He was a pupil of Wanda Landowska and often concertized with his pianist sister Amparo.

From the collection of Monique Paravicini Simon (1916-2003), who was active in the world of dance and involved in the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo. (15119)
