Translated from the German, in part: "Dear friend, I am really unhappy not to fulfill your wish and to help you at least in this form with your new business; but it is my firm decision not to write a line more [...]" Goldmark goes on to mention previous "polemic" which has caused him distress, and explains that a previous incident "almost earned me the enmity of the entire family, and I answered with just as many 'No's. And these [...] numerous 'No's earned me just as much enmity. The periodical 'Musik' was and is the last, to which I gave something [...] Hopefully today's 'No' will not earn me your enmity as well.
