[Astaire, Fred. (1899–1987)] Weisz, Victor "Vicky." (1913–1966)

Original Drawing

Striking original drawing of the great dancer by the Hungarian-British political cartoonist, one of Britain's leading left-wing cartoonists during the 1940's. Astaire is shown in a caricature-style depiction with his characteristic top hat and huge chin, dancing on a black-and-white checked floor. Weisz has signed and inscribed at the upper right corner: "Vicky. To Robby, July 20, [19]43." Pen, ink, and correction fluid on board. Some discolorations to the upper half of the image. 15 x 9.5 inches (38.1 x 24.1 cm).

Weisz was born in Berlin, Germany, to Hungarian-Jewish parents. He studied at the Berlin School of Art and by 1928, at the age of fifteen, he was working as a freelancer, drawing caricatures. Weisz's cartoons took a very strong anti-Nazi stance. As a member of the Jewish community with expressed socialist opinions, Weisz decided to leave Germany when the Nazis came to power. In 1935, he came to the United Kingdom, and worked for the News Chronicle, Daily Mirror and Evening Standard, building a reputation as an incisive commentator on political events. By the 1940s, Weisz, using the pseudonym "Vicky", was one of the leading British left-wing cartoonists.  (15031)
