First edition of the piano score of the first version of the Requiem, inscribed and signed by the composer in purple ink on the page facing the title to librettist and theatre manager Camille du Locle: "Al mio carissimo Du Locle / Milano 22 maggio 1874 / G Verdi." 4to, publisher's black cloth. 229 pp. [PN] 44004. Rebacked, toned, else fine. Hopkinson 3A, with the secondary title page printed in violet and the name of Michele Saladino in black.

The influential theatre manager Camille du Locle is best remembered for mounting the original production of Bizet's Carmen in 1875. He worked with Verdi several times, completing the libretto to Don Carlos after the death of Joseph Méry, and also playing a key role in the genesis of Aida in 1869-70. In 1876, a financial dispute arose with Verdi, and Du Locle moved to Capri.

The Requiem was premiered at Milan's San Marco on May 22, 1874, and was followed by three performances at La Scala with the same soloists (Teresa Stoltz, Maria Waldmann, Giuseppe Capponi, and Ormondo Maini). Verdi conducted the performance on May 25, and Faccio conducted those on May 27 and 29. (15001)
