Satie, Erik. (1866-1925)

Relâche. Ballet instantanéiste en deux actes, un entr'acte cinématographique, et “la queue du chien”. Scénario et décors de Francis Picabia. Cinématographie de René Clair.

Paris: Rouart, Lerolle & Cie.. [1926]. First edition. Score: 3 ff. (title, frontispiece plate), 45 pp., folio. [PN] R.L.11577&Cie. Publisher's wrappers. One of 500 copies printed.  A very good copy of the first edition of the piano score of the important 1924 ballet by Francis Picabia with music composed by Erik Satie.

The title was thought to be a Dadaist practical joke, as relâche is the French word used on posters to indicate that a show is cancelled, or the theater is closed. The first performance was indeed cancelled, due to the illness of Jean Börlin, the principal dancer, choreographer, and artistic director of the Ballets suédois. (14960)
