[Moffo, Anna. (1932–2006)] Beaton, Cecil. (1904–1980)

Two Photographs in "La Traviata," Signed by Beaton

Two original Beaton photographs of the important American soprano and actress in the 1966 Metropolitan Opera production of La Traviata, photographed, signed and inscribed by the photographer and production's costume designer, Cecil Beaton. One photograph is signed "Beaton" at the foot; the other is inscribed to Moffo: "For Anna the most beautiful Violetta - from her grateful designer Cecil. 1966." Some damage to the right edge of both photographs. From the collection of Mario Lanfranchi, Moffo's husband.

Moffo first appeared at the Met in 1959 as Violetta, a part that would quickly become her signature role. The 1966 production, directed by Alfred Lunt, was mounted especially for her. Cecil Beaton's opulent and dazzling gowns designed for the opera were a particular success; he also designed the sets. (14946)
