Jurgensen [visible under light as "Moscou, chez P. Jurgenson / Paris chez A. Noël. Leipsic chez D. Rahter / St.-Pétersbourg, chez J. Jurgenson. Varsovie, chez G. Sennewald"] has been covered on the front wrapper and title page with a label listing the French distributor, A. Noël. [PN] 17669. 171 pp. Heavy wear to wrappers and spine with some tears, overall toning, and areas of pink staining; some internal toning and foxing; structurally sound and overall very good. 7.5 x 11 inches (19.4 x 27.8 cm).The Taneyev version was first published September 1892 with this plate number, followed in November by the simplified solo piano version by Tchaikovsky. This title page lists both editions. Fuld p. 614. Rare. Worldcat records only the copies at the BnF, the British Library and Paul Sacher-Stiftung. We have not traced any copies of any issue of the first edition at auction in over 100 years of records.
The Nutcracker is a two-act ballet, originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov with a score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (op. 71). The libretto is adapted from E. T. A. Hoffmann's story "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King", by way of Alexandre Dumas' adapted story "The Nutcracker". It was given its premiere at the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg on Sunday, December 18, 1892, on a double-bill with Tchaikovsky's opera Iolanta.
