Serafin, Tullio. (1878-1968) [Zagonara, Adelio.]

Signed Photograph to Adelio Zagonara

An original photograph of the important Italian conductor, signed and inscribed on the mount to tenor Adelio Zagonara and dated Rome, June 11, 1941. He has penned below the image (translated from the Italian): "To Adelio Zagonara, a very great artist, my valuable collaborator [...] of many years. Cordially, Tullio Serafin." Photograph 11.5 x 16.5, mounted to 18 x 24 cm.

One of the greatest Italian conductors of the 20th century, Serafin was closely associated with both Callas and Sutherland. According to Opera Grove, without him "the postwar revival of interest in the Italian Ottocento opera and the bel canto style would have been impossible. In Gobbi's opinion he was an 'infallible judge of voice and character and an invaluable guide to young singers.'

The Italian tenor Adelio Zagonara began his career in the 1930's and was a popular artist at the Teatro Reale in Rome. He also appeared at Covent Garden, Paris, La Scala, and the Teatro Colon, before becoming a respected teacher in Australia. He appears on many surviving recordings from the 1930's and 1940's, including Tullio Serafin's 1946 Aida with the Opera House of Rome. (14882)
