Signed Cabinet Photograph with AMQS from "Die Königin von Saba"

Signed cabinet photograph of the important Hungarian-born Viennese composer, inscribed to the Italian composer Leone Sinigaglia with an autograph musical quotation from Goldmark's best-known work, Die Königin von Saba. Goldmark has signed and inscribed to Sinigaglia at the foot of the photograph, dated Vienna [18]99, and penned the first five measures of the overture to the opera along the left edge. Photographed by Carl Jagerspacher of Gmunden. Some areas of discoloration to the image, with surface scratches, and some smudging to the inscription; mounting remnant on the verso; otherwise overall in very good condition. 4.25 x 6.5 inches (11 x 16.8 cm).

One of the most important musical figures in late 19th and early 20th century Vienna, Karl Goldmark is remembered for his opera Die Königin von Saba (1875) as well as the ever-popular Violin Concerto in A minor. The plot of Die Königin von Saba centers on a love triangle not found in the Bible between the Queen of Sheba, Assad (an ambassador at the court of Solomon), and Sulamith (Assad's betrothed). The opera was first performed at the Hofoper (now the State Opera) in Vienna, on 10 March 1875. It became Goldmark's most famous opera and subsequent performances have been mounted internationally.

Leone Sinigaglia studied at the conservatory of Turin with Giovanni Bolzoni before moving to Vienna in 1894. There he studied with Mandyczewski and also had a close association with Johannes Brahms. He also spent time in several other European cities, and worked from 1900 on in Prague with Antonin Dvorak. An accomplished mountain climber as well as a composer, he was the first to scale several peaks of the Dolomites. (14672)
