Gravure Photograph

Gravure photograph of the great composer by Maria Fellinger, published by V. A. Heck of Vienna. In one of the several fine photographs Fellinger made of Brahms between 1893 and 1896, he is shown outside, leaning sideways over the back of his chair and holding one of his signature cigars, facing the camera. Overall toning with a heavier area of toning to the upper margin; plate marks. Sheet size 6.5 x 10 inches (16.8 x 25 cm), matted to 9.5 x 12.5 inches (24.5 x 32 cm).

Maria Fellinger and her husband Dr. Richard Fellinger were close friends of Brahms, with whom he spent his Christmas Eve later in life and who hosted many musical soirées. An accomplished amateur singer and artist, Maria Fellinger frequently performed Brahms' songs at musical evenings, and also captured several well-known photographs of the composer as an older man. Richard Fellinger, a trusted friend, served as Brahms' executor. (14662)
