Original Photograph of the Composer by Leone Sinigaglia

An original photograph of the great composer towards the end of his life, photographed by the Italian composer Leone Sinigaglia and dated Vienna, 1896. Brahms is shown in a vignette portrait wearing his distinctive bowler hat and monocle. Sinigaglia has signed and dated at the lower right of the card. A few surface scratches, one large corner chip, light toning, and mounting remnants on the verso; overall in very good condition. 3.75 x 5 inches (9.4 x 12.4 cm).

Leone Sinigaglia studied at the conservatory of Turin with Giovanni Bolzoni before moving to Vienna in 1894. There he studied with Mandyczewski and also had a close association with Johannes Brahms. His compositions include many folksong arrangements as well as several orchestral and chamber works, many influenced by music of his Piedmontese background. An accomplished mountain climber as well as a composer, he was the first to scale several peaks of the Dolomites. (14661)
