Vienna Scene - Silhouette Image

Original jumbo cabinet photograph, ca. 1900, of a Vienna scene as captured by the noted Austrian silhouette artist Otto Böhler. The image shows a busy scene at Vienna's Albrechtsplatz (now Albertinaplatz), with groups of Viennese opera-goers, celebrities and other passers-by strolling or chatting around the Mozart memorial. Among the figures is the recognizable portly form of Johannes Brahms, strolling alone at the center of the image, and a few steps behind, Johann Strauss. Down at the right corner, we spy Engelbert Humperdinck and Enrico Caruso. The Wiener Staatsoper was completed at Albrechtsplatz in 1866, and the Mozart memorial was installed there in 1896 (it now stands in the Burggarten.) Photographic reproduction as part of a series of "Dr. Otto Böhler's Schattenbilder" by R. Lechner of Vienna, and on the photographer's card. A few light surface scratches, slight dent to one corner, and some scratches on the verso; overall in fine condition. 9.75 x 7.25 inches (24.8 x 18.3 cm).

The Austrian silhouette artist Otto Böhler specialized in portraits of many great conductors, composers, and pianists of his time. Though frequently reproduced, the originals of his many silhouette portraits were rarely preserved. (14656)
