Verdi, Giuseppe. (1813-1901)

Autograph Letter

Autograph letter from the important Italian composer to his business agent in Genoa and frequent correspondent, Giuseppe De Amicis. March 6, 1898. 5 x 8 inches, matted together with a reproduction photograph of Verdi to 15.5 x 12 inches. In fine condition.

Translated in full from the Italian: "Dear De Amicis, A telegram which reached me this morning informed me that you were not able to leave Milan because you are waiting for a person who will arrive tomorrow night from Paris.  If this is the case, I will leave on Tuesday and will reach Genoa after 6:00 PM. In all other respects, we are in agreement; wait for my telegram which I will write the very morning of my departure.  Until then, I remain, Affectionately yours, G. Verdi."

Around this time, "preparations were under way for the public premiere of three of the eventual Quattro pezzi sacri.  They were to be heard, under Taffanel, at a Concert Spirituel in Paris on 7 or 8 April....Verdi stayed in Milan until 15 March, surrounded by the attentions of his Milanese friends, including, of course, Boito and Ricordi.  In a letter of 4 February to Barerina Strepponi...he complained of lack of appetite and of sleeping badly, but his health was generally good, and the Gazzetta musicale di Milano, announcing on 3 March the forthcoming concert, indicated that the composer would probably travel to the French capital for the occasion.  But on 20 March Verdi wrote Ricordi from Genoa that his physician had strongly advised against the trip to Paris."
