"A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" - SIGNED VOCAL SCORE & LIBRETTO

Vocal score and libretto to the very popular 1962 musical, each boldly signed by the important composer and librettist.  The vocal score (New York: Chappell & Co, Inc, copyright 1964) has been signed on the title page and is in fine condition. The libretto (New York: Dodd, Mead, & Company, 1963) features a charming two-page illustration by Al Hirschfeld and 8 pages of photographs from the original Broadway production, and has been signed by Sondheim on the front endpaper. Hardcover with original dustjacket. A few small tears, tape remnants, and shelf wear to the libretto's dustjacket; otherwise overall in fine condition.

Inspired by the farces of the ancient Roman playwright Plautus (251–183 BC), specifically Pseudolus, Miles Gloriosus, and Mostellaria, the musical tells the bawdy story of a slave named Pseudolus and his attempts to win his freedom by helping his young master woo the girl next door. The musical's original 1962 Broadway run won several Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Author (Musical). A Funny Thing has enjoyed several Broadway and West End revivals and was made into a successful film starring the original lead of the musical, Zero Mostel. (14584)
