Vaughan Williams, Ralph. (1872-1958)

Typed Letter Signed

Typed letter signed from the important English composer, expressing his willingness for his article about Bach to be republished in the United States. Dated Dorking, May 25, 1953. "Dear Mr. Wilson, Thank you very much for your letter. My article on Bach was printed in the "Listener," the journal of the B.B.C. and I presume belongs to them. I am asking my publisher, The Oxford Press, to get into touch with them and with you in regard to reprinting it in America. I shall look forward very much to seeing your book when it comes out. Yours sincerely, R. Vaughan Williams." On his letterhead, typed with two small holograph corrections.
The influential English composer of symphonies, chamber music, opera, choral music, and film scores was also an important collector of English folk music and song. He also published numerous articles on musicology. The article mentioned in the present letter is "Bach, the Great Bourgeois," which originated as a 1950 broadcast on the BBC and deals with performance practice issues for modern-day musicians performing Bach.
