Vaughan Williams, Ralph. (1872-1958)

Autograph Letter - "I know nothing about folk-dance"

Short autograph letter from the important English composer, likely to fellow composer Cyril Scott, agreeing to speak at a folk dance event. Undated. "Dear Mr. Scott, [...] I know nothing about folk-dance. But I daresay I could do some patter between the dances. Are the RCM [Royal College of Music] team considered good enough to dance by their teacher? Yours, R. Vaughan Williams."

The influential English composer of symphonies, chamber music, opera, choral music, and film scores was also an important collector of English folk music and song. Although professing to know "nothing about folk-dance," he was in fact elected president of the English Folk Dance and Song Society in 1932. (14577)
