Autograph Musical Quotation and Ink Portrait with AMQS's from 11 Further Russian Composers and Pianists

A striking collection of short AMQS's by Russian composers and pianists on a single sheet, including a short unsigned autograph quotation from the important composer's opera Pan Voyevoda, and signed autograph quotations from eleven other musicians. The musical quotation in Rimsky-Korsakov's hand is clipped and mounted below a pen drawing of the composer by A. Haferland. The other composers represented are: Maximilian Steinberg (Scherzo from Symphony no. 3); Leonid Nicolayev (Sonata for Cello and Piano); Nikolai Myaskovsky (Symphony no. 10); Mikhail Gnessin ("Abrahams Jugend"); Alexandre Karzew (Prelude op. 10, no. 1); Julia Weissberg ("Die Kleine Seejungfrau"); Reinhold Glière (Symphony no. 2); Alexandr Goedicke (String Quartet); Sergei Vasilenko (Violin Sonata); and two others. Several of the autograph quotations are dated April 1929. 23.5 x 19.5 cm.

Based on a libretto by Ilya Tyumenev, Rimsky-Korsakov's Pan Voyevoda was completed in 1903 and first performed in October 1904, and has proved to be one of Rimsky-Korsakov's least-successful works. This is due to the ramshackle, melodramatic plot rather than the quality of the music, which at its best (notably in the woodland scenes and dances) approaches the poetic, lyric grace of Smetana, Dvořák and the spirit of the work's dedicatee, Frédéric Chopin.
