Milhaud, Darius. (1892–1974)

"Trois Caprices de Paganini" - with Autograph Title Page

Musical score of Milhaud's 1926/27 "Trois Caprices de Paganini traités en duos concertants pour violon et piano", including the original autograph manuscript title page followed by photographically reproduced pages of the musical manuscript. Milhaud has penned the title, date, and dedication on a large bifolium of manuscript paper as the title page; internally, 14 pp. of music are reproduced on 4 separate folded sheets of medium weight photograph paper, reinforcing in blue ink the "Trois" of the title and notations of three bars on the following page. Overall toning, large split to the title page's spine fold; otherwise in very good condition. 10.5 x 13.75 inches (27 x 35 cm).

The work consists of Milhaud's added piano part to Paganini's Violin Caprices nos. 22, 10, and 13, creating a set of virtuosic duos dedicated to Madame [Yvonne] la Marquise de Casa-Fuerte. A violinist, Casa Fuerte (1895-1984) was the founder of the concert series La Sérénade, and a friend of Poulenc, Milhaud, Virgil Thomson, and others.

The important French avant-garde composer Darius Milhaud had a particular interest in re-composition and arrangements of earlier works: "He made arrangements of The Beggar’s Opera and Le jeu de Robin et Marion; he wrote works using the music of Corrette (Suite d’après Corrette), François Couperin (Introduction et allegro), and the little-known 18th-century composer Baptiste Anet (Viola Sonata no.1,L’apothéose de Molière), whose Tenth Violin Sonata he also transcribed. In La bien-aimée he transformed Liszt’s arrangements of Schubert waltzes, writing for a mechanical piano and orchestra." (Jeremy Drake, New Grove Online.) (14475)
