d'Indy, Vincent. (1851–1931)

2e. Quatuor pour 2 Violons Alto et Violoncelle (op. 45) - Score

Paris: Durand & Fils. 1908. [PN] 5411. 8vo. 65 pp. Light wear to front wrapper, two splits to spine, but binding intact and overall in very good condition. 7.25 x 10.75 inches (18.7 x 27.5 cm).

Constructed rigorously around a four-note theme (which is notated in semibreves at the head of the score), D'Indy's second string quartet owes much to Franck, but can also be seen as following in the tradition of Beethoven's quartets. The piece was premiered in March 1898 by the Quatuor Parent, to an enthusiastic response from the audience and critics. It is still considered by many as an unjustly neglected masterwork. (14378)
