Bartók, Béla. (1881–1945) [Kodály, Zoltán. (1882–1967)]

Magyar Népdalok énekhangra és zongorára (Hungarian Folksongs for voice and piano) - SIGNED BY BARTÓK

Budapest: Rozsnyai Károly. [1906]. First edition of the Hungarian Folksongs for voice and piano, a collection to which the two great Hungarian composers each contributed ten songs, signed by Bartók on the title page. [PN] B. K. 4to. Softcover, 26 pp. Spine reinforced with fabric tape; wear and soiling to the covers with some small losses at the edges; staple binding partially detached; signature crisp and overall in good condition. 9 x 12 inches (23.5 x 30.5 cm).

This early collection of songs with simple piano accompaniments was a precursor to the later, comprehensive studies of Hungarian folksongs by the two important composers, ethnomusicologists and collaborators, who spent years traveling the Hungarian countryside collecting traditional melodies. One of the most famous songs in the collection, "Elindultam szép hazámból" ("I left my beautiful fatherland"), later came to be applied to Bartók himself as he assumed the role of an exile. The ten songs in this collection by Bartok are classified as BB 42 (Sz 33 / W 13). (14269)
