Kabalevsky, Dmitry. (1904-1987)

Violin Concerto - Autograph Musical Quotation

Autograph musical quotation of two measures from the second movement of the prolific Russian composer's Violin Concerto op. 48, signed and dated February 6, 1951. Mounted together with a later glossy photograph.

Composed in 1948, Kabalevsky's Violin Concerto was dedicated to Soviet youth, along with his Cello Concerto no. 1 and Piano Concerto no. 3. The work was premiered by 18-year-old violinist Igor Bezrodny. In keeping with Kabalevsky's great dedication to music education, the concertos were apparently intended to serve as advanced study pieces for young players. Today, the works are nearly as often played by bona fide virtuosi as by students -- a trend started by David Oistrakh. (14205)
