Hindemith, Paul. (1895-1963)

Autograph Christmas Card Designed by the Composer!

An graphically wonderful autograph Christmas card from the German composer, violist, and conductor, who designed the illustration side himself.  On the verso, he apologizes for not being able to participate in the Kiel music festival of 1953. Dated New Haven, December 12, 1952. Translated from the German, in part: "I'm glad that you like 'Harmony' and had success with it. -- In June we will finally be on our way from here to Europe, so I won't be able to come to the Kiel Festival (anyway, I'm a bad sailor and sprats don't agree with me)..." The recipient was the then Generalmusikdirektor of Kiel, Georg C. Winkler. Hindemith's address appears to have been added in pencil by his wife Gertrud. Hole-punched along the left edge, else fine. 14 x 10.5 cm.  (14162)
