Autograph Payroll Document Listing Court Dancers To Napoleon I

Autograph document signed by the French ballet dancer, ballet master, violinist, and composer, listing the dancers in service to Napoleon I and their pay in June, 1812. The list shows Gardel as the maître des ballets, Jean-Étienne Despréaux as the maître à danser, the "dieu de la danse" Auguste Vestris as first dancer, and among the female dancers Émilie Bigottini, a particular favorite of Napoleon's. The yearly salaries ranged from a handsome 5620 francs for Gardel to 600 francs for the répétiteurs. An interesting piece of ballet history. One horizontal crease and some light toning; overall in very fine condition. 9.25 x 14.5 inches (23.4 x 37.2 cm).

Gardel directed the Ballet de l'Opéra de Paris for 40 years, adapting to the turmoil of the French Revolution and the reign of Napoleon. His first three ballets, Le Judgement de Pâris (1787), Psyché (1790), and Télémanque (1790) drew upon classic myths and were considered compatible with the old regime. As the French Revolution caused a political upheaval, Gardel created patriotic dances which combined political content with neoclassical ideas. Gardel argued that strong technical dancing was as important to ballet as story and theatrics. He kept mime to a minimum and cast those with natural dramatic ability, offering dancers what he saw as challenging and dramatic work.
