Weitzmann, Carl Friedrich. (1808-1880)

Two Autograph Letters to Ernst Otto Lindner

Two interesting autograph letters from the German music critic and theorist, to his colleague, musicologist and journalist Ernst Otto Lindner and mentioning Weitzmann's 1863 publication Geschichte des Clavierspiels und der Clavierlitteratur ("History of Piano Playing and Piano Literature") and Lindner's 1864 work Zur Tonkunst ("On the Musical Art.")

In the first letter, dated Berlin, May 2, 1863, Weitzmann writes that he is sending Lindner, who served as editor-in-chief of the Berlin newspaper Die Vossische Zeitung, an engraving of the Bach organ in Arnstadt with the "acknowledgement of your kind contribution to the same," and asks politely "to grant the accompanying notice a space in your newspaper." 1 p. on blue notepaper; folding creases; otherwise in very fine condition. 5.5 x 8.75 inches (14.2 x 22.3 cm).

In the second letter, dated Berlin, January 14, 1864, Weitzmann thanks Lindner for advertising his Gesichte des Clavierspiels and informs him that "the Prince of Hohenzollern-Hechingen, to whom I dedicated the book, has just awarded me the order of his house, and I ask you the courtesy of printing this." Continuing, he congratulates Lindner on his newly published book, Zur Tonkunst ("On the Musical Art"): "Its historical and philosophical essays come across with a pleasant clarity and certainty. The naturally and openly presented subject itself captures us, and believing and without doubt we follow its development, expansion and reform, without a forced chain of hypotheses, with which Reitzmann's frameworks, for example, often are put together. Despite our differing views on the current situation of music, I would still like to ask your permission to advertise your book." 2 pp. of a bifolium; folding creases and two small tears at the lower edge; otherwise in fine condition. 5.25 x 8.5 inches (13.5 x 21.5 cm).
