Original 1936 snapshot of the prolific French composer and the great conductor together in Les Baux-de-Provence. The two were acquainted for many years, with Milhaud a frequent guest conductor at the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra during Monteux's tenure there; Milhaud also composed a special piece for Monteux's eightieth birthday in 1955! The two are seen relaxing in deck chairs outside; on the verso, an unidentified hand dates the picture to August 1936.
