[van Gogh, Vincent. (1853 - 1890)] Ryssel, P. van (= P. Gachet). (1828-1909)

Madame Gachet au Piano. ETCHING BY THE FAMOUS DOCTOR OF VAN GOGH

Etching, 1873, 17.2 x 14.3 cm, signed "P v. Ryssel" and "1iere 1873" in the plate, the artist's hand stamp below image. Rare.

Dr. Paul-Ferdinand Gachet was the physician of Vincent van Gogh and himself a reasonably accomplished amateur artist, as evidenced by the present lovely etching.  Van Gogh's Portrait of Dr. Gachet is one of his most revered paintings and depicts him during the period in which he took care of Van Gogh, the final months of his life in Auvers-sur-Oise. Gachet was a great supporter of artists and the Impressionist movement. He was an amateur painter, signing his works "Paul van Ryssel", referring to his birthplace: Gachet came "from" (Dutch: "van") "Ryssel" (actually Rijssel) – the Dutch name of Lille.
