"Summer and Smoke" - Original Signed Program and Photograph

Original program from the 1952 revival of Williams' 1948 play, boldly signed on the cover by both the author and the play's star, Geraldine Page. Together with a striking original photograph from the production, signed by Page over her image. Program, 8 pp., with some creases and a slight smudge to Page's signature, but overall in very good condition, 5.5 x 8.5 inches (14 x 21.5 cm). Photograph in very fine condition, 8 x 10 inches (20.3 x 25.4 cm).

Summer and Smoke is set in Glorious Hill, Mississippi, from the "turn of the century through 1916", and centers on a highly-strung, unmarried minister's daughter, Alma Winemiller, and the spiritual/sexual romance that nearly blossoms between her and the wild, undisciplined young doctor who grew up next door, John Buchanan, Jr. The first production of the play, in 1948, was a slight disappointment after the previous year's A Streetcar Named Desire. The 1952 revival, however, was a smash, thanks to Page's acclaimed performance. The production firmly established director Jose Quintero, and is also credited with beginning the Off-Broadway movement. (13764)
