Original 1921 Argentinian Programs and Broadside

Four original programs and one broadside from performances of the important German pianist and pedagogue (billed in Spanish as Guillermo Backhaus) and the Wendling Quartet, at the Buenos Aires venues Teatro Cervantes and Teatro Odeon in August-September 1921. The series of performances included chamber works by Brahms, Mozart, Beethoven and Schumann. The detailed program booklets, each about 20 pp., contain extensive program notes. Folding creases and toning, otherwise in fine condition. Broadside 8 x 10.25 inches (20.1 x 26.4 cm). Programs each 5.25 x 7.5 inches (13.5 x 19.2 cm).

Backhaus and the Wendling Quartet from Stuttgart, consisting of Karl Wendling, Hans Michaelis, Philip Neeter, and Alfred Saal, enjoyed a warm welcome on their South American tour. "[I]t goes to show the extent of refined taste prevalent in South America that they would accord such welcome to a string quartet," Backhaus told the Musical Courier on his return to the US.
