Hemingway, Ernest. (1899 - 1961)

Archive of Press Photographs

An interesting collection of original press photographs relating to the great American novelist, short story writer, and journalist, his career and his family. The 47 photographs, most with original press captions on the verso or alongside the image, include two early family photographs with Hemingway as a child; numerous portraits of the writer through the years, including a reproduction of an early charcoal portrait; several photographs of Hemingway's wives Hadley, Pauline, Martha, and Mary, alone and with the writer; various images of Hemingway meeting other literary and cultural figures; several photographs and a reproduction of an autograph letter relating to Hemingway's second son, Patrick; a striking photograph of the Cuban fisherman on whom The Old Man and the Sea was reportedly based; and two photographs of Hemingway's grave and his memorial in Sun Valley, Idaho. Several of the photographs bear captions relating to Hemingway's suicide in 1961.

Photographs range from 4 x 6 to 8 x 11 inches and are in varying condition from good to fine; some have creases, small tears and losses, and light toning. All show signs of newspaper use, with original press captions, irregular cropping, and stamped dates on the versos ranging from 1920 to 1991. (13731)
