Large 1954 Piccagilani Photograph as Norma

Large-format Piccagliani photograph of the immortal soprano in her 1954-5 La Scala role as Norma. A later reprint photograph in fine condition, with Piccagliani copyright label and some handwritten notes on the verso. 9.5 x 12 inches (24 x 30.5 cm).

The druid priestess Norma was Callas' signature role, in which she has remained unrivalled for 50 years. Her 1954 recording of the role in this production, with Tullio Serafin at La Scala, is widely considered one of her greatest. 1953-1954 also marked a turning point for Callas: she began to lose weight dramatically, becoming a striking and svelte soprano, but arguably at a cost to her voice.
