Callas, Maria. (1923–1977)

Large 1953 Piccagilani Photograph as Medea

Large-format Piccagliani photograph of the immortal soprano in her 1953-4 La Scala role as Medea. A later reprint photograph in fine condition, with the label of La Scala on the verso. 9.5 x 12 inches (24 x 30.5 cm).

Callas learned and performed the role in Cherubini's opera within a week for a 1953 production in Florence, to critical acclaim. The production was so successful that the Teatro alla Scala decided to stage the opera during the opening week of its 1953-1954 season, with Leonard Bernstein filling in for an indisposed Victor de Sabata and staged by Margherita Wallmann.
