Cabinet Photograph Inscribed To Maud Powell from her Accompanist

Original cabinet photograph of the pianist Rudolf von Scarpa, signed and inscribed on the verso to the internationally acclaimed American violinist, with whom he performed several concerts in 1896. He is shown as photographed by Dana of New York in 1895, and has written on the verso (translated from the German): "To Miss Maud Powell, the great artist, in great admiration and gratitude, Rudolf von Scarpa, New York, May 1896." In fine condition. 4.25 x 6.5 inches (10.8 x 16.5 cm). Together with a clipped program photograph of Powell in fine condition. 4.5 x 6.75 inches (11.1 x 17.3 cm).

Powell studied with Joachim in Berlin, debuted under him with the Berlin Philharmonic and in the same year appeared with the NY Philharmonic under Thomas. Her long and successful career included the US premieres of major violin works by Dvorak, Lalo, Saint-Saens, Sibelius and Tchaikovsky as well as a variety of American composers whom she championed. She appeared in several concerts with von Scarpa at the keyboard through the Northeast in early 1896. (13658)
