Hungarian Quartet. (1935-1972) [Vegh, Sandor. (1912 - 1997)]

Signed Photograph from 1937 Quartet

A rare postcard photograph signed by the complete Hungarian Quartet in 1937: Zoltán Székely, Sándor Végh, Denes Koromzay, and Vilmos Palotai. The quartet is pictured playing on the recto, and the members have signed on the verso with an inscription in French to a Professor Fontana, and dated Vicenza, January 22, 1937. In fine condition. 5.5 x 3.5 inches (13.8 x 9 cm).

The Hungarian Quartet had made its debut in 1935, and met with swift success. Székely was a friend and sonata partner of Béla Bartók, and the group became rapidly known by giving the Hungarian première performance of the Bartók 5th Quartet, which it studied with the composer. By 1938, the group had been heard in every major city of Western Europe.

Sándor Végh, the original first violinist of the quartet when it was founded in 1935, moved to second violin in 1937 when Székely joined the ensemble and then left in 1940 to found the Végh Quartet.  This a rare autograph from the short period in which he played in the ensemble - we have only previously encountered signed photographs from the later iterations of the ensemble which continued for some 32 years post-Vegh!
