The Grande Sonate op. 69 has been described as the first cello sonata to give equal importance to the cello and piano parts. Composed in 1808, it was dedicated to Baron Ignaz von Gleichenstein and first performed by Nikolaus Kraft and Dorothea von Ertmann in 1809. The cello sonatas no. 4 and 5, op. 102, were composed between 1812 and 1817, during a difficult period when Beethoven's deafness was becoming increasingly profound. They were published in 1817 with a dedication to Countess Marie von Erdody, a close friend and confidante of the composer.
