Autograph Letter
Autograph letter from the prominent Russian pianist (whose name is variously spelled as Anna, Annette, or Annetta Esipova, Essipoff, or Jessipowa) and wife of Theodor Leschetizky, arranging a visit to play at an acquaintance's home. In the undated 1880's letter on Vienna letterhead, Yesipova writes (translated from the German): "Dear madam, Thank you very much for your kind letter; I am very flattered that you would like to hear me play at your home. Of course I will be glad to play, but without any conditions. If you will allow me to come to you as a friend and to do my best, to please you, you will do me a great honor. I will take the liberty of coming tomorrow between 12 and 1. With sincere admiration, Yours, A. Essipoff Leschetizky." 3 pp. on a bifolium, with one folding crease, in very fine condition. 5 x 8 inches (12.5 x 20 cm).Yesipova was one of Leschetizky's most brilliant pupils. She made her debut in Saint Petersburg in 1871 attracting rave reviews and the artistic admiration of both Tchaikovsky and Liszt, particularly for her effortless virtuosity and singing tone. She then began concert tours which brought her in 1876 to the United States, where her playing was greatly admired. She heard the playing of Fanny Bloomfield and advised her to train under Leschetizky, whom Yesipova married in 1880 and later divorced.
In 1885, Yesipova was appointed Royal Prussian Court Pianist and from 1893 to 1908, she was professor of pianoforte at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. Among her students were Sergei Prokofiev, Leff Pouishnoff, Sergei Tarnowsky, Maria Yudina, Leonid Kreutzer, Isabelle Vengerova, Anastasia Virsaladze, Leo Ornstein, Isidor Achron, Thomas de Hartmann, and Alexander Borovsky (Borowsky) [1889–1968].
