Mancinelli, Luigi. (1848-1921)

"Isaias - Cantata Sacra" - Autograph Musical Quotation

AMQS from the leading Italian orchestral conductor who also composed music for the stage and concert hall. On a Titian postcard, Mancinelli has penned four bars from his sacred cantata Isaias (1887), on a text by Giuseppe Albini. Dated December 1904. On the verso, the postcard is addressed to the Argentinian collector Ramona Imaz Odaño. In very fine condition. 5.5 x 3.5 inches (13.8 x 9 cm).

"Mancinelli had been judged a composer of great promise on the basis of his early incidental music and his first opera, Isora di Provenza, in which he may be said to follow Wagnerian methods – notably in his use of leitmotifs – if at a distance. But in general he saw himself as following the true path for Italian opera marked out by Otello and Falstaff. After becoming a busy international conductor in the late 1880s he composed little and sporadically... He was at his best in the creation of atmosphere and background. From this derived his success in incidental and descriptive music and the appropriateness of his late ventures into film music (Frate Sole, 1918, andGiuliano l’apostata, 1920)... His output also included sacred music and songs." (Dennis Libby/Julian Budden, New Grove.) (13490)
