Rubinstein, Anton. (1829–1894)

Autograph Letter about Opera Librettos

A long and interesting autograph letter from the great Russian pianist and prolific composer to a female friend (addressed as "Frau Professorin,") sending best wishes from his wife and mentioning his views on appropriate texts for librettos. Responding to the correspondent's suggestion of an opera subject, Rubinstein writes: "The material about Penelope is very nice and would certainly be suitable for working up for the stage, but I personally do not like it since I am generally opposed to using ancient Greek and Roman texts today. I find they lack dramatic warmth and their types of thought and feeling are far removed from ours." He goes on to say that the correspondent's future son-in-law would be welcome to send him ideas for a libretto, but lays out a long list of unacceptable themes: "it must not be political or theological, nor specifically oriental, Greek, Roman, Polish, Hungarian, nor Russian, nor Jewish persecution or indeed anything which has been done too often, but rather something like Norma, Fidelio, Don Juan..." Rubinstein closes: "it would be best if he were to communicate with me by letter... Please do not take it amiss that I express myself so bluntly about the proposed material and material in general, and be assured of my continuing regard."
