[Einstein, Albert. (1879 - 1955)]

Original Program from Einstein's 1923 Visit to Barcelona

Original concert program from an "intimate party" given by the student association of the Universitat Nova, Barcelona, in honor of Albert Einstein, during his February 1923 visit to Spain. The gathering featured traditional Catalan music played by La Cobla Barcelona, and dances collected by J. Rigall, founder of the Catalan folk dance association. The program, in Catalan, is dated February 28, 1923. 4 pp. letterpress printed on card with deckel edges. In fine condition. 4.75 x 3.5 inches.

Einstein was invited to visit Spain in 1923 by Esteve Terradas, another physicist, and Julio Rey Pastor, a mathematician, to lecture in Barcelona and Madrid on his theory of relativity. Already a Nobel prize winner and an international celebrity when he arrived, he was treated as a star, although few understood the discoveries that had made him famous. Einstein brought along his violin and, when the constant socializing started to get to him, enjoyed playing with local musicians. Reportedly, Einstein also met with anarchist revolutionaries in Barcelona, and is said to have compared himself to them - as a scientific, if not political, revolutionary. (13325)
