Another hand has dated above the signature in pencil: March 31, 1984. Illustrated by Beni Montresor, the book is "Gian Carlo Menotti's own narrative version of his opera of the same name. To it he brings the same virtuosity that has made his name one of the most luminous in the world of the musical theater." (Flap text.) 48 pp. Hardcover with dust jacket; one large tear to the back of the dust jacket repaired with tape; shelf wear and edge chips to the jacket. Overall fine in a very good dust jacket. 9.75 x 12.25 inches (25 x 31 cm).

From the collection of Leo Smit (1921-1999), the composer, pianist, conductor, and educator whose career spanned seven decades of musical life in the United States. A friend and colleague of many of the most important musical figures of the twentieth century, Smit had close relationships with Igor Stravinsky, Béla Bartók, Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, Harold Shapero, William Schuman, Alex Haieff, Leopold Stokowski, and Lukas Foss and was a strong advocate and performer of contemporary music, as well as the composer of more than 100 works.
