[Coleman's] name first became known to jazz musicians and enthusiasts in the USA and Europe through the recordings he made with Fats Waller while he was a member of Teddy Hill’s band (late 1934 – spring 1935)... Influenced mainly by Louis Armstrong, Coleman gradually developed an individual voice; his playing was noted for the elegance and fluidity of his phrasing and his highly musical melodic ideas. In the 1940s and 1950s he adopted some of the devices characteristic of bop, though during the last two decades of his life he returned to his former style. (New Grove Dictionary of Jazz.) (13032)
